Preparing for a Hurricane

Oct 26, 2012

Before a windstorm or hurricane hits your area, there are some important steps you should take to stay safe and help minimize damage to your property.

  • Stock up on such necessities as food and bottled water, as well as a first aid kit, a portable radio, warm clothing, and clean blankets.
  • Keep a supply of flashlights and extra batteries handy.
  • Since open flames can be hazardous, avoid relying upon candles and kerosene lamps as potential light sources.
  • Protect windows with boards or shutters.
  • Look around your property and reduce the threat of flying debris. Move all outdoor items (patio furniture, garbage cans, garden tools) indoors.
  • If possible, remove any tree limbs that may be too close to your home, or appear to be diseased or damaged.
  • Check mobile home tie-downs.
  • If you live in an identified surge zone, elevate furniture – or move it to a higher floor – to protect it from flooding.

Preparing for Evacuation

In the event you are asked to evacuate your home:

  • Decide in advance where to go – a friend's home, a motel, or a shelter are possible options.
  • Identify a safe evacuation route – and alternate routes. Remember that roads may be crowded and that bridges or causeways may be under water.
  • Keep your car fueled and store some bottled water, nutritious snacks, and blankets in the trunk.
  • Listen to local radio or television for the latest information and instructions for your area.
  • Make arrangements for your pets. If you need to be evacuated to a shelter, most shelters won't allow them. Animals that assist people with disabilities are permitted.
  • Before leaving your home, shut off the gas, water, and electricity.

After the Storm

Be sure to heed the safety warnings of local officials. Don’t go into your home until it is safe to do so. It’s important to be cautious of hazards – such as downed power lines and broken glass. When it is safe to enter:

  • Cover exposed portions of property with heavy-duty tarps and board up any broken windows. Protect the premises from additional exposure to the elements and minimize the possibility of additional property damage.
  • Save receipts for temporary repairs, make inventory lists of damaged property, and write down any issues or concerns they have, so that insurance personnel can process your claim as quickly as possible.
